CENG 5131 and CENG 5132: Engineering Applications

The first course presents techniques of modern engineering and physics emphasizing mathematical methods. As is common in industry today, the problems will be solved using a mathematical package designed for such problems. Students will be able not only to solve various problems but also plot the results with the MATLAB software. (Maple or Mathematica could also be used with instructor's permission)

New topics: After laying the mathematical and MATLAB foundations, we will concentrate on several application areas such as Laplace transforms analysis of systems and digital signal processing.

The CENG 5132 course presents a thorough study of a modern engineering techniques emphasizing mathematical methods.  As is common in industry today, the problems will be solved using a mathematical package designed for such problems. Students will be able not only to solve various problems but also plot the results with the MATLAB software.

CENG 5231: Network System Specification

This new course is intended to give you an understanding of the latest computer and networking hardware and software technology. The procedures and approaches used to evaluate and specify systems will be covered.

We will study a system that combines data acquisition, engineering workstation capability, and small-business aspects in a networked group of computers. First, we will define the requirements of the system. The overall purpose is to select an appropriate system to meet the requirements. Individual students can concentrate on aspects of the system that interests them.

CENG 5431: Digital Signal Processing

This course will cover the fundamentals of Digital Signal Processing using MATLAB as the software for homework. We will cover spectral analysis, sampling, and the design of digital filters.

Prerequisite: CENG 5131 or Equivalent

CENG 5432: Digital Control Systems

This course will cover the analysis and synthesis of digital control systems.

Prerequisite: CENG 5131 or Equivalent

CENG 5434: Microcomputer Systems Design

Course topics include product design, software design and interfacing for modern 32-bit microprocessors and microcontrollers. Programming assignments and a project of topic of interest will be required.

New topics: Study networking chips and hardware to connect microprocessors to networks.

CENG 6434: Advanced Microcomputer System Design

Programming, hardware design and product design with microcomputers. Emphasis includes operating system considerations and design of real-time control systems. Laboratory instructions.

Prerequisite: CENG 5434

CENG 6838: Research Project (CENG Capstone Project Course)

The course assignment will consist of project of interest to the student. A written report and oral presentation will be required.

The Capstone Project Course will only be offered in the Spring semesters.

We invite students in CSCI and SWEN to consider these courses as electives. They emphasize practical aspects of computer specification, selection and use.
