Dr. Shih presenting CENG projects at Walk of Success
Shih regularly teaches High-Performance Computer (HPC) Architecture, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Parallel Processing (PP). The uniquely innovative approaches aimed to expand the knowledge horizon often result in full enrollment. Professor Shih has supervised most of UHCL's recent computer engineering capstone research projects and several theses. The recent emphasis in vital medical, energy, and space applications has resulted in several presentations in worldwide forums.
Professor Shih and students successfully improved the performance of scientific/image modeling including the speedup of Medical Image Texture Analysis from 8 days on VAX to within 10 seconds on a PC platform (70,000 times speedup). Professor Shih and students are very enthusiastic in applying the high-performance computing (HPC) expertise to participate in the great space expedition to the moon and Mars. Professor Shih is currently helping NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in modernizing the Space Radiation Computation to improve performance and radiation estimate accuracy. This effort will help to ensure the secure operation of all NASA space crew/equipment for safer / sooner / cheaper missions. HPC experiments are currently performed on parallel cluster / grid / MATLAB@ / DSP / FPGA platforms to evaluate tradeoffs and overhead of computation / memory / communication. Current focuses in HPC are in Science / Engineering for Space, Energy and Medicine applications.
