BIOL 5535

Neotropical Rainforest Ecology

This course presents an in-depth study of the ecology of tropical rainforests, with special emphasis on the neotropics and the Amazon.  Material covered includes physical structure and geological development, climatology and hydrology, plant communities and succession, plant-animal coevolutionary relationships, animal communities, Amazon ethnobotany and human impact issues.

BIOL 5535 is an elective course for graduate BIOL and ENSC majors and is often co-listed with an undergraduate course (BIOL 4035 Ecology of the Amazon).  Non-majors are welcome in the course, provided they have some lower-level science, preferably ecology, in their background.

BIOL 5535 is normally offered once per year in the spring or summer term.

Graduate students who complete the Neotropical Rainforest Ecology course are eligible for discounted fees on any future UHCL Amazon Expedition.
