Undergraduate Computer Science students can apply for two major scholarships: UHCL National Science Foundation Scholar Program and the UHCL Texas Scholars in Computer Science Scholarship Program. There are eligibility criteria such as being an United State citizen or a permanent resident. Furthermore, the GPA should be 3.0 or above. However, the chance of successfully awarded the scholarship is excellent for eligible applicants since there is a large number of awards.

NSF Scholars
The two scholarship programs were set up by two major grants the Computer Science program received from the National Science Foundation and the Texas State. Check the scholarship Web sites for detailed information.

The university provides many types of scholarship, grants and loans in several levels: school, university, local, state and federal. They have different eligibility criteria. Check the UHCL financial aids Web site for more information.

The academic advisors of the School of Science and Computer Engineering provide the following advice on application on some scholarship:

Want a Scholarship??? Tips for Success…

1) Applicants are asked to provide letters of recommendation. While all letters are read and given careful consideration, I would advise students to provide as many letters from UHCL faculty as possible. A letter from a UHCL faculty member carries more weight, than one from someone outside UHCL, especially for students that have been at UHCL for more than one semester.

2) All applicants should have someone familiar with English grammar read their essay. An essay that has been edited for grammar and spelling will be scored higher than one that has not.

3) If needed, applicants should be sure to include a copy of their "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA) forms. Many students applied for scholarships that required that these forms be included, but failed to provide the forms. Applications that lacked these forms were immediately pulled from further consideration for scholarships that required them. Note that not all scholarship requires FAFSA.

4) Students considering applying for scholarships should become involved in the UHCL community. Participating in SGA, volunteering to serve on event organizing committees, joining student organizations, etc. is given very favorable consideration. Being elected to an office in a student organization is also considered favorably. Applicants should list their extra-curricular activities separately, and include mention of their activities in their scholarship essay.

5) Students should familiarize themselves with the requirements of all of the scholarships they are applying for, and apply for all the scholarships for which they are eligible.

6) Finally, applicants should check their applications carefully to make sure they are complete. Incomplete applications are the first ones removed from further consideration.
