The application process for the graduate Computer Science program contains the following steps.

(1) Fill out the online application. The UHCL Office of Admissions will then send an acknowledgement letter to the applicant, including an admission documentation checklist, and a student ID and password for access to UHCL E-Services, which allow students to track their admission status and view their updated checklist to monitor the completion of the application.

TA boardNote that all transcripts of previously attended colleges and test scores should be sent to UHCL Office of Admissions.

For the MS CS program, applicants must submit official General GRE examination (GRE) score (Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing) directly from Educational Testing Service ETS). GMAT is not acceptable as a replacement of GRE. In general, MS CS students should have a combined GRE score of 1000 or higher for the verbal and quantitative sections and a, verbal score of 350. However, the admission committee consider students below these score if they have other outstanding credentials.

Students who have already earned a master's degree in a related field of study from an accredited university in the U.S. may request a waiver of the GRE requirement by writing a petition to the Associate Dean.

International students should also submit official TOEFL scores (minimum score is 213) and other required documents. Contact an International Student Advisor of the international student services for details. A waiver of the TOEFL requirement will be considered for applicants who hold at least a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher education.

Students intended to submit optional "Letters of Intent", "Letters of Recommendation" or other similar documents to be reviewed by the Computer Science Admission Committee should send them directly to:

University of Houston-Clear Lake
Computer Science Admission Committee
School of Science and Computer Engineering
2700 Bay Area Blvd., Suite 3611
Houston, TX 77058-1098

When the application file is completed, the Office of Admissions will evaluate the transcripts and then forward the entire application package to the advising office of the School of Science and Computer Engineering (SCE).

(2) The School's Advising Office will further review the student's transcripts for transfer hours, core curriculum and program foundation courses completed and GPA, and prepare the application package for the admission review.

(3) The application package is then reviewed by the Computer Science Admission Committee for admission.

The admission committee will consider many factors in a holistic manner to determine acceptance, including GPA, GRE scores, grades of any computer science and mathematics courses, undergraduate majors, recommendation letters, letter of intent, etc.

After an application file is completed, its evaluation and review may usually take one month before a letter is sent to the applicant. If accepted into the master's program, committee recommendations (if any) and faculty advisors will also be identified in the program acceptance letter.  Faculty advisors are assigned during the review process; student requests for specific assignments are considered.

To track the application status, students may use E-Services, or communicate with UHCL Office of Admissions (call 281-283-2500 or uhcl_applicants@uhcl.edu) or SCE Advising Office (call 281- 283-3711 or sceadvising@uhcl.edu). Since the Office of Admissions will not notify the applicants when the application file is completed, it is important for the students to ensure that their application files are completed.

The advising and admission pages of the SCE have additional useful information. Perspective students may also visit the future student pages of the UHCL Website for general information about admission, including general admission requirements, admission procedures and online application.
