The Alfred R. Neumann Library is located on the second and third floors of the Bayou Building. It provides extensive support to Computer Science students. The library's CS Information page contains a nice collection of useful information of CS students.

Dr. NeumannThe reference desk is staffed by professional librarians whose duties include instruction in the online catalog, print and electronic resources, general use and specialized subject areas. Classes in database searching are offered during each semester, along with reference appointments for individual assistance. The reference staff publishes a variety of instruction guides, called Bibliotips, on various topics of interest ranging from Keys to Finding What You Need and Locating Full Text to detailed instructions for searching specific databases such as ACM DIGITAL LIBRARY, LEXIS-NEXIS ACADEMIC and EDUCATION FULL-TEXT.

Resources especially useful to CS students include:

  • Applied Science Full-Text (1983 - present) provides online indexing to over 560 core English-language scientific and technical publications, many in the computing field. Ninety-eight journals are full-text.
  • ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Digital Library (1985- present) provides citations, selected abstracts and reviews, and over 69,000 full-text and full-image articles for all ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) journals, magazines, conference proceedings and some ACM co-sponsored publications on topics in computer science and related fields. Also includes Table of Contents for journals and magazines (1954 - ) and conference proceedings (1986 - ).
  • NetLibrary consists of over 30,000 scholarly, reference, and professional e-books. A respectable subset is in the computing field. For example, it is possible to search the subject of Java or books published by O'Reilly press.
  • Direct print subscriptions from Ebsco for the School of Science and Computer Engineering run slightly above $100,000. The majority of those are computer journals.
  • The library subscribes to the IEEE Computer Society Library Subscription Plan electronic (CSLSPe) database that provides full-text Internet access to IEEE Computer Society periodicals and conference proceedings, including 23 online IEEE Computer Society journals and magazines (backfile to 1988) and more than 1,700 conference proceedings titles (backfile to 1995).
  • Safari Books Online technical books provide access to many current technical books in computer science.

Furthermore, the library is a member of many consortia and participates in the TexShare card program through which students may borrow materials directly from other colleges and universities. Students can also request books and papers through online interlibrary loan forms. Ask about these opportunities at the library reference desk, or call 281-283-3910, or email library@uhcl.edu.
