Fun Workshop on Communications

April 12, 2007 | Posted by Bun Yue

Readers of this blog probably know my constant emphasis on communications skills for our students. Quick, what is better than acquiring essential communications skill for enhancing your career? …doing so while having a ton of fun.

The NSF scholar organization is sponsoring another free English communications enhancement workshop in May. Here is the gang from the previous workshop last December.

A brief description of the workshop:

“Effective speech and communication are known to be among the most important skills in career advancement. UHCL NSF Scholar Organization has teamed with Dr. Christine M. Paul, the director of foreign language program of UHCL, to conduct a fun-filled workshop to enhance your English speech and communication skills easily through various games, group exercises, role playing, etc. The program is custom designed for students in computing, science, engineering and mathematics to prepare them for future career success.”

I have attended three sessions in the previous workshop myself. Unlike other workshops, this one is fun and not boring. Christine is a very devoted and dynamic instructor who obviously cares about student learning. The workshop appeared to be a sequence of games to me. I wished I had time to attend more sessions. I am not going to give away what games await you. Instead, here are some photos from a session I attended.

Dr. Paul

The student evaluation from the last session is uniformly excellent. Some comments include: “you are a great instructor,” “This class is good for me,” and “This workshop is really helpful to improve my English.”

The workshop this time will be even better. Students completing the workshop will receive a very useful and memorable gift!

The workshop will be held four days a week (Mon. to Thurs) on May 14th-17th, and May 21st-24th at UHCL Bayou Building 2504, 1;30-3:00PM. With a normal cost of $135, it is free to UHCL students and students from San Jacinto College. Seat is limited to 20 in a first come first serve manner.

Additional information on registration can be found in the workshop flyer.

I’ve been in business for 20 years and I wish someone would have told me how important it is to communicate. I used to think that doing a great job would get me noticed and would be enough. How wrong was I.

People who are interested in learning public speaking skills can always find a Toastmasters club near them at an affordable rate. Good for networking as well. www.toastmasters.org

Though starting out with guidance from an experienced person is always a good idea (compared to the peer-to-peer nature of Toastmasters).

Hats off to you for conducting this workshop. After being in the corporate business world for over 25 years, the number one skill lacking in graduate students is making effective presentations and communicating clearly, concisely, with passion so that is resonates with the audience and is memorable.

Workshops such as these should be mandatory for all students. If you want to boost your chances of being hired, chances of advancement and chances of success, sharpen your public speaking skills.

You accomplish this through practice, joining good groups such as Toastmasters. Never give up an opportunity to speak in public.

People always will focus on new opportunities to make himself understood, to learn to properly assess relationships with others, communicate effectively and make oneself understood, to advance your career and be recognized for their merits. A beautiful work to share our experience and also of their own.
