The writing center

January 25, 2007 | Posted by Bun Yue

Many of our international students tend to have strong technical background. They have undergraduate degrees in computing, mathematics, engineering and science. On the other hand, their writing and communications skills have room for improvement, an advice I have repeatedly provided. Many highly successful alumni I met during the years have very good communications skills to go with their strong technical background.

Indeed, many computing courses do not target writing and communications skills. As an alternate, you may consider taking advantage of the writing center of UHCL. The center provides many facilities to improve your writing skill, a crucial craft in career advancement.

The description in its website (http://hsh.uhcl.edu/writingcenter):

“The Writing Center is an instructional facility designed to provide all university students with peer tutors to help with their writing projects.

Our primary function is to teach writing.

We will work with students on any type of writing task; however we do not provide editing service. Students must bring their own papers to their conferences and are responsible for the quality of their final products. Peer tutors will work with students at any stage of the writing process from idea generation to style, grammar, and editing strategies.”

They provide many workshops to cater for different needs. The enrollment of each workshop is limited to 10. I list the Spring workshops below.

Good luck in using the writing center. They even provide online tutoring!
